Rising young metallers Next To None recently announced the release of their forthcoming second album ‘Phases’ through InsideOutMusic in Europe and EMP in North America on the 7th July 2017. This comes off the back of the band’s first ever European tour alongside label-mates Haken, as well as forthcoming dates supporting Mike Portnoy’s much anticipated Shattered Fortress show which start later this week in London.

The band have now launched a lyric video for the new track ‘Pause’, and you can check that out here.

Drummer Max Portnoy comments: “Our song Pause shows both sides of the band. While being really brutal and heavy, it shows a lot of the progressive side of our playing as well!”

‘Phases’ is now available to pre-order, and digital pre-orders through iTunes and Amazon come with an immediate download of ‘The Apple’ & ‘Pause’:

1st July – Trianon, Paris, France
2nd July – Slagthuset, Malmo, Sweden
3rd July – Kulturfabrik, Esch Sur Alzette, Sweden
4th July – Teatro Della Luna, Milan, Italy
5th July – Z7, Pratteln, Switzerland
6th July – 013, Tilburg, Holland

Formed in 2012, and based in Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania, the foursome released their well-received debut ‘A Light In The Dark’ during 2015 on InsideOut. But if this set a template for the band’s style, then this has now been excitingly stretched.

“We actually began to write songs for the new record as soon as we finished the first one,” explains drummer Max Portnoy. As previously, this involved the duo of Portnoy and vocalist/keyboard player Thomas Cuce collaborating in this part of the process. And, also to some extent mirroring ‘A Light In The Dark’, there’s a partial concept here. “On the previous album we had six tracks which were lyrically linked. But it did not stretch throughout all the
songs. This time, we have four tracks which deal with the idea of grief. However, that isn’t reflected on the entire record.”

The new 12-track album (including two short instrumental passages) marks the recording debut of new guitarist Derrick Schneider who replaced Ryland Holland last year, (the line-up is completed by bassist Kris Rank). “Ryland wanted to go to college, and is now going to Berklee College Of Music, whereas the rest of us wanted to be in the band full-time. So, there was no way that he could carry on with us. And we were very lucky to find someone immediately to take over. He was recommended to us by Bumblefoot (the ex-Guns N Roses guitarist who guested on the first record) and he was the only guy we tried out that fit perfectly. Musically and personally he fit straight in with us. One of the things he does so well is shred on guitar but he also has great voice and plays very heavy which has made a difference to our style and sound.”

Although the album was mixed by the Grammy nominated Adam “Nolly” Getgood (Periphery), the band have produced themselves this time, a decision Portnoy insists has been of immeasurable help. “It’s a collective production, with all of the band having their say. We had strong ideas as to how we wanted this album to turn out, and if we’d brought in an outside producer, then this could have changed. So, it was best for us to stick together and follow our own vision.” The recording process started early last October, with the drum parts being recorded at Neal Morse’s Radiant Studios in Nashville; these sessions were engineered by Jerry Guidroz. “We then spent about four months at Thomas’ home studio (Battery Powered Studios) doing the rest of the work; Thomas was the engineer for those sessions. We were in there every day until 3am. I don’t know how Kris coped, because he was going to school after we’d finished in the studio and getting just a couple of hours’ sleep.

Portnoy believes Next To None have become a sharper and more challenging band with ‘Phases’. “I suppose you could say that we’ve done here is do more of everything we did before, but the greater experience we now have has helped us become better at what we want to do. This time around, there are no guests featured, as was the case on ‘A Light In The Dark’, and as it’s just the four of us you are getting more of what we want to express to everyone, musically and lyrically.”

Enigmatic art-rock band Bent Knee release their stunning new album ‘Land Animal’ worldwide today. The 10-track collection brings the listener on a journey through commentary on today’s globalized society and how people continue to evolve in a world of ever-growing complexity.

To celebrate, the band have released a live video for the single ‘Terror Bird’, and you can watch that here.

‘Land Animal’ is available as CD, LP+ CD & digital download here.

“Throwing off shackles of genre…truly the definition of experimentalism.”Consequence of Sound

“It’s very rare that an artist or band comes along that changes your perspective on music and art. Bent Knee have done just that.”Substream

Bent Knee formed in 2009 as a democratic collective determined to push the boundaries of pop and rock. Lead singer and keyboardist Courtney Swain’s soaring vocals are instantly arresting. Guitarist Ben Levin is one of the most dynamic and versatile guitarists around, shifting between the raging and raucous to the sublime and meditative. Bassist Jessica Kion and drummer Gavin Wallace-Ailsworth combine into an enthralling rhythm section that’s equal parts powerhouse and nuance. Violinist Chris Baum’s kinetic violin work provides drama, grace and intrigue. World-class producer and live sound designer Vince Welch weaves it all together with a captivating, expert touch.

The band has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Its last two albums, 2016’s Say So and 2014’s Shiny Eyed Babies, were hailed as significant art-rock achievements. The group has performed hundreds of shows across the world to date. During the fall of 2016, the band played for ecstatic audiences as an opener for the U.S. leg of The Dillinger Escape Plan’s farewell tour ahead of signing with InsideOutMusic/Sony.

“We’re very excited to be working with InsideOutMusic/Sony,” said Swain. “It’s wonderful to have our music reach a lot of new ears across the globe through them. It’s an honor to join their roster of prestigious artists and we look forward to a long relationship with the label.”

Tuesday The Sky, the new Ambient Instrumental Rock project by Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos, will be releasing its debut album ‘Drift’ worldwide next week, on June 30th, 2017, via InsideOutMusic.

The album’s third single “It Comes In Waves” is being launched today with a playthrough video produced by Chris Anderson, which features performance footage by Jim Matheos (Guitars & Bass) as well as Lloyd Hanney (Drums) and Kevin Moore (Keyboards). The clip can be seen here:

“Vortex Street” promo video: https://youtu.be/rWIq6Wul8Fw
“Today The Sky” static clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XITon_EBATA

Tuesday The Sky and “Drift” sees Matheos expanding the boundaries of his playing and sound even further than ever before. “Drift” came together in the downtime between Fates Warning finishing “Theories Of Flight” and the beginning of the touring cycle, enabling Matheos to explore a type of atmospheric and instrumental music you might not expect of him. Taking cues from artists like Brian Eno, Boards Of Canada, Sigur Ros and Explosions In The Sky, he explores expansive textures and ambient electronica, as well as some of the most colossal riffs he has ever produced.

“Drift” also features the talents of God Is An Astronaut’s drummer Lloyd Hanney, who provides a rhythmic backbone that is at once punchy, precise and restrained when necessary. Other guests include long-time OSI collaborator and former Dream Theater member Kevin Moore who plays keys on two songs as well as Anna-Lynne Williams (Trespassers William, Lotte Kestner), who provides ethereal vocals (of the non-verbal kind) on two other songs.

“Drift” comes with cover artwork created by Jan Tomic and will be released as special edition CD, black LP + CD & digital download. Here is the album’s track-listing:

Tuesday The Sky – “Drift”:
1. Today The Sky
2. Kite
3. Vortex Street
4. It Comes In Waves
5. Dyatlov Pass
6. Far And Away

8. Roger, Gordo
9. The Rowing Endeth
10. Drift

The Tangent, the progressive rock group led by Andy Tillison, recently announced the release of their first new music since 2015. Their new ninth studio album ‘The Slow Rust of Forgotten Machinery’ is set for release on 21st July 2017, and recently Andy and guitarist Luke Machin got together to discuss the record track by track.

You can watch the first of these videos here.

The band recently launched the track ‘Two Rope Swings’ which you can listen to here.

The song was originally commissioned as a solo piece by Andy for the ‘Harmony For Elephants’ project, in which the images of leading wildlife photographer Lesley Wood were brought together with music by a variety of artists, including Steve Hackett. The Tangent version followed and features all members of the band prominently.

The line-up for this album once again features Tillison on keyboards, vocals (and for the first time on a Tangent record – drums), Jonas Reingold on bass, Luke Machin on guitars and vocals, and Theo Travis on sax and flutes plus new member Marie-Eve de Gaultier on keys and vocals. There are also guest appearances from author/playwright and Chumbawamba founder Boff Whalley on vocals, and upcoming DJ/producer Matt Farrow.

The album sees The Tangent in political commentary mode once again – this time often focussing on the horrendous plight of refugees from war torn parts of the world – and the way in which they are treated by the West, and in particular by the tabloid press. The album laments the new trend in building walls and defending borders across the world yet takes time to look at the breakup of friendships and other more personal issues – along with a song about the fate of wildlife in the modern consumer world.

And it’s a Progressive Rock Record. Full of intricacies, long developed pieces, challenging arrangements and virtuoso playing from all members. New sounds and styles (the band have brought a DJ on board for some sections) – new voices and techniques (first female vocals in The Tangent since the “Not As Good As The Book” album 10 years ago). A new producer in the form of Luke Machin whose open and deep/clear sound is a major factor of this album, a new drummer in the form of Andy Tillison who decided at long last (after drumming for 30 years) to let his own performances guide the rest of the band rather than adding another musician later. And after 13 years of asking, Jonas finally agreed to play some double bass in a song where Luke also plays some Scat guitar and Andy does a full on drum solo.

“The Slow Rust Of Forgotten Machinery” also features stellar artwork from Marvel / DC Comics artist Mark Buckingham. The sleeve of the album is totally based on the music it contains and was especially created for this project.

The album will be available on limited digipak CD, gatefold 2LP + CD, and digital download, and you can find the full track-listing below. Pre-order the album now here.

1. Two Rope Swings
2. Doctor Livingstone (I Presume)
3. Slow Rust
4. The Sad Story of Lead and Astatine
5. A Few Steps Down the Wrong Road
6. Basildonxit

The band will head out on tour in support of the new record, once again joining forces with Sweden’s Karmakanic to present albums by both bands. The full list of dates is as follows:

Tuesday The Sky, the new Ambient Instrumental Rock project by Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos, will be releasing its debut album ‘Drift’ worldwide on June 30th, 2017 via InsideOutMusic.

A video clip directed by David Brodsky / MyGoodEye for the album’s second single “Vortex Street” can be now seen here

The song can also be streamed via Spotify here

Jim Matheos checked in with the following comment about “Vortex Street”
“”Vortex Street’ was co-written with vocalist Anna-Lynne Williams and is a bit different from most of the songs on “Drift” in that the main focus is the vocals, as opposed to the more guitar centered material on the rest of the album. The basic outline of the song was written using the AdrenaLinn II to process the guitars and bass so that they, hopefully, don’t sound like guitars anymore. Those ideas were sent to Anna-Lynne, who crafted the beautiful melody lines. The “chorus” was created by editing and processing some of the main vocal lines along with some alternate vocal ideas Anna-Lynne provided.”

The previously released first single and album opening track “Today The Sky” can still be checked out here

Devin Townsend Project have been on the road touring for the majority of 2017 in support of latest album ‘Transcendence’, and recently began a run of Summer live dates including Download Festival this past weekend.

Yesterday Devin attended the Metal Hammer Golden Gods ceremony in London, where he was named ‘Riff Lord’, an award previously given to the likes of Dave Mustaine, Brian May and Phil Campbell. To celebrate, a brand new lyric video for the track ‘Offer Your Light’, taken from ‘Transcendence’, is available to see here: https://youtu.be/fRg55iT1QoQ

Devin had this to say: “Hey all! Well heck, I guess I won an award for being a guitar guy…sweet! All those years of social ineptitude has manifested in an ability to play 32nd notes. Take that, dad! …to celebrate, we are doing a ‘lyric video’ for a track I had been encouraged to release when the album first came out, but decided to go with another one instead. As it turns out, people seem to really like this song, so have at ‘er! Here’s a kind of rockin, kind of straightforward track from Transcendence called ‘Offer Your Light’, written essentially about trying to look at the positive amidst the ever increasing sea of neurosis-inducing bullshit the world keeps spewing at us. I’m in the beginning stages of writing new music now, and I hope this finds a home in your listening world for the next 4 minutes or so…best part is; there’s no guitar solo! Lots of love, Devin ‘riff-lord’ Townsend (apparently!)”

‘Transcendence’, the follow-up to 2014’s ‘Z2’ double-album (half of which was made up of the DTP full-length ‘Sky Blue’), sees the award-winning Townsend exploring a relatively new way of working, collaborating with the entire DTP band during the writing stages of the record. “The result of this process is a record that I truly think the intention of is special” he says of the album. “I ‘found’ gas to put into the tank and am glad I did. I think the intention, the theme, and the participation of everyone involved allows this album to act like a fulcrum between the past few years and what I intend to do next with the symphony. I am very proud of it and everyone involved.”
