Brian recently retired from the Police after over 22 years. He is a former writer for DPRP and contributes to Progarchy. A Summer’s End stalwart he is one of the few people to have attended all 10 festivals. Which makes him feel old. He spent 6 months in the USA in 2002 on a Fulbright Fellowship and has regularly returned, including trips to see Glass Hammer in Nashville and echolyn in New Jersey.
His love of American Prog began when he discovered Spock’s Beard about 15 years ago and he has amassed a large collection in the intervening period. Ask him why and he would probably say that American bands combine the earnestness of UK bands with the joy of the Scandinavians. The former can, he thinks, sometimes be a bit too earnest and the latter…Well, you get the idea.
His favourite album list, not necessarily American, would probably include:
- Discipline – Unfolded Like Staircase
- echolyn – As the World
- Rush – Permanent Waves
- ELP – Brain Salad Surgery
- Genesis – Seconds Out
- The Flower Kings – Unfold the Future
- The Tangent – Le Sacre du Travail
- Spock’s Beard – Snow
- Marillion – Afraid of Sunlight
- Izz – Sliver of a Sun
- Blue Oyster Cult – Imaginos
- echolyn – Mei
- Yes – Drama
- Tool – Aenima
- Jethro Tull – Stormwatch
- Glass Hammer – Lex Rex
- IQ – Ever
- Marillion – Script for a Jester’s Tear
