Comatose is Lee Abraham’s latest ambitious release in his increasingly impressive and varied solo career.  This release is a continuous flowing song cycle imagining the experience of someone in a coma following an accident, which is a world away in feel from his previous album, the more A.O.R. oriented Colours in late 2017, which included one of my favourite songs of the last few years, the brilliant The Mirror Falls. Lee Abraham rejoined Galahad in 2017 when they were well in to the writing and recording process for their truly epic and outstanding Seas of Change album which was also an extended progressive piece, and it appears that playing on such a long form album has impelled Lee Abraham to embark on a similar solo exploration of an extended format. Whilst Galahad’s clearly Brexit influenced album focused on wide scale political subjects Lee Abraham’s Comatose is on a much more personal and human scale. Lee Abraham takes us on a 47 minute ‘real time’ apparent ‘stream of consciousness’ based on the thoughts of a person in a coma floating in that twilight world of semi-consciousness.

On recent albums Lee Abraham has written songs perfectly suited to a regular range of guest vocalists, including Dec Burke (Dust & ex-Frost*), Simon Godfrey (Valdez, Shineback & ex-Tinyfish), Robin Armstrong (Cosmograf) and Marc Atkinson (Riversea & ex-Nine Stones Close). However, wisely on this song cycle he has only utilised one lead vocalist to provide a consistent voice for the protagonist undergoing this traumatic experience, and even more wisely he has employed the impeccable and wonderfully soulful voice of Marc Atkinson. Atkinson shows his vocal dexterity and touch, equally adept at handling the more rock oriented Twisted Metal & No Going Back with passion, whilst also sensitively conveying the delicate emotion of the diaphanous highlight of The Sun.

Lee Abraham has continued to develop his skills as a writer and a performer, playing all the keyboards, guitars and bass on this album. He retains the ever dependable Gerald Mulligan on drums, who is in particular a force of nature furiously powering the opening very progressive piece, Numb Pt 1. This Floydian style curtain opener begins cinematically with a deep ominous synth drone accompanying the bleeps of a heart monitor. A fragile acoustic guitar picks out a few notes interchanging with some distant electric guitar tones – there is a very real sense of the ‘near’ and the ‘far’, the feeling of an internal world set against a barely perceived wider environment. The calm is briefly broken by a dramatic keyboard, bass and drum fanfare before we return to the synth drone punctuated with subtle sound effects. An orchestral keyboard passage builds and builds until bass, drums enter and Lee Abraham’s now distinctive trademark high pitched guitar soloing soars above the piece. Heavy Porcupine Tree style riffing erupts and then takes flight into another Abraham guitar solo… and then settles down into the sounds of an ambulance siren and it feels like we are in the back of that vehicle. Long-time collaborator Rob Arnold makes his first appearance with some deftly played piano leading up to the first time we hear the vocals at nearly 8 minutes in to this opening. Marc Atkinson’s vocals evoke the sense of dislocation and disconnection the central character must be feeling in his semi-conscious  netherworld:

The Light is Drowning out the Noise,
My Mind is telling me it’s real and not Destroyed
Taken from all I Know, Memory is fading
Taken from all I Know, Just Numb and Waiting

This extended opening feels like an overture for the whole album, setting the scene with a range of evocative music and sound effects, dramatically immersing the listener deep in the experience.

Lee Abraham has previously proved himself to be a high quality song writer, particularly on my favourite Abraham album Black and White from 2009, which also features some extended pieces. Whilst this album imaginatively conveys one storyline in an extended piece, crucially he has also not lost sight of interspersing the more cinematic or atmospheric sections like Realisation with songs which could easily stand-alone outside the narrative of this album.  Twisted Metal is one such song as it throbs with a keyboard and drum opening and Marc Atkinson sings with controlled power over an insistent synth pulse, vocalising the frustration of a commuter. His words are interrupted suddenly with the implication that such pent up feelings may have led to his current predicament:

I sit and stare at the car in front of me, willing it to start
The screaming starts to fill my head like a work of art
The open road is in my head, in my head, Get out of the way before you’re…

This is a very well-crafted rock song… and probably not one to be played too loudly in traffic jams!
The listener is then suddenly thrust from the frustration of the driver in to the strange euphoria of a ‘near death’ experience in Ascend the Sky  with mellotron sounds and choral vocals, featuring Lee Abraham’s wife Diane and Abraham’s Galahad band mate Mark Spencer. Lee Abraham lays another flowing guitar solo over the piece and there is a real sense of Ascension.

One of the highlights from this outstanding album is the achingly beauty of The Sun, which rises with softly played acoustic guitar and flute sounds acting as a gorgeous bed upon which Marc Atkinson can lay down his soulfully gorgeous voice. The tempo and instrumentation increases but the sense of sweet melancholy remains as the main character remembers the love of his partner, seemingly all thrown away by ‘a momentary lapse’.  There is much beauty in that sense of regret and reminiscence.

Numb Pt 2 is a musical refrain of  Pt 1 with added power  reflecting a desperation to stay alive with Gerald Mulligan in fine form on drums. The heavy riffage and drumming continues on No Going Back, underpinning an intense vocal performance from Atkinson… before it subsides to the sound of a ventilator in a hospital ward.

The enigmatic Awaken? segues in over the ventilator with Rob Arnold’s finely judged piano introducing a contemplative feel before drums, bass and acoustic guitar gently join the piece. This final part of Comatose builds gradually in intensity before Lee Abraham’s electric guitar fluidly and emotionally solos for a gloriously extended finale – it’s a remarkable piece of guitar playing to complete an excellent album. It is left to the listener to guess whether the protagonist survives his comatose state or not … but I may be slowing down when I next drive to work.

Taking on such an extended work is an ambitious project, and calling a progressive rock album Comatose is brave due to the risks of some ironically twisting such a title negatively with regard to such a sustained song cycle! Lee Abraham has been wholly successful artistically, telling a story with great musical skill and imagination.  At the heart of his work is an understanding of the importance of great melodic song writing, whether for 3 minutes or over a longer duration. In this work Lee Abraham has probably produced one of the standout albums of 2019, filled with sweet melody and guitar power, and definitely one of the finest albums of his notable career.

Progressive rock legends THE FLOWER KINGS are pleased to present a first track from the group’s much anticipated new studio double-album ‘Waiting For Miracles’, which will be released on InsideOutMusic on the 8th November 2019. The album is comprised of 15 new tracks, recorded over the summer at RMV studio in Stockholm, Sweden – a vintage studio space owned by ABBA star Benny Andersson.

The band is excited to now share a track from this record: “Here’s ‘Black Flag’. A fine example of what you can expect of the new record, yet just a glimpse at the rich variations this new opus offers. It is a huge tribute to when music was played by a real band, a time when being creative in the studio meant progress in all direction and fusing all styles – this is a band creating its very own special cinematic sound, built upon 60’s & 70’s and contemporary prog, rock and orchestral music. A fine display of instrumental and vocal interplay from all members – the trademark Flower Kings sound is back, but yet with a new twist. Full circle – and this track even has guesting from former TFK bass player Michael Stolt. This time The Kings set sail for a big adventure.

The Flower Kings started as an outlet for guitarist/singer/composer Roine Stolt in 1994 – a time when prog-rock wasn’t mere history, nor a dirty word. The band quickly gained momentum and was one of a handful of bands helping to revive the progressive rock scene worldwide. Roine has since collaborated with a host of legendary musicians across various projects, including his acclaimed 2015 album with Yes-legend Jon Anderson, progressive-rock supergroup Transatlantic alongside Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy & Pete Trewavas, and a year as bass player with Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett. The Flower Kings however, has always felt like home for Roine and the other band veterans Jonas Reingold & Hasse Fröberg.

Devin comments: “After a year of intensive recording, mixing, and reflection, I have decided where I want to take the next level of my career as a live performer. I have had success and great memories from both the Devin Townsend Project as well as Strapping Young Lad, but now I am fortunate enough to be able to follow the muse where it currently leads. I am proud to announce that for the first ‘band’ tour of the Empath cycle, I am going to stretch my wings in ways I have not had the opportunity to do before and tour with a ‘backing band’ that can shift and morph as the music dictates instead of adhering to a click track.  ‘Empath Europe Volume 1’ will be the first example of this, and the first tour will be in Europe (other territories to follow).
I have spent considerable effort think about the things I wanted to do for these shows, and one thing I came out of DTP with was the awareness that I wanted to incorporate a more improvisational element to what I do. With the best players I can find, my plan is to interpret my back catalogue, as well as the Empath material, in ways that may change nightly. less computers, and less of a rigid structure. I want to use Volume 1 as a way to bring my music to people in a potentially new way. People playing music…
I hope you will consider joining me at these concerts. As a performer, it’s important to be able to be willing to react, and my hope is that each of these shows will be a unique experience.
Thank you for allowing me to do what I do. See you there?
Devin Townsend

Over the past few years, the success that Devin has slowly worked for has fortunately come with the power to control his own creative destiny. The recent successes with the DVD from a sold-out Royal Albert Hall, or his 2012 ‘Retinal Circus’, or last year’s ‘Ocean Machine’ live DVD with the Orchestra and Choir of State Opera Plovdiv has put him in a position where with the new album ‘EMPATH’, he will once and for all define himself as a musical force outside of any particular genre classification.

On this album Devin has decided to see what would happen if all the styles that make up his current interests were finally represented in one place. To finally shake the fear of expectation, and just do what it is he was meant to do creatively, EMPATH, true to the name, is about allowing the audience a feeling for a variety of musical emotions. The musical dynamics represented on this single album are broad, challenging, and immense. To approach this sort of work with a long history of what makes heavy music ‘heavy’, allows this to be done with a type of power rarely heard.

Joining Devin on this album is Frank Zappa alumni Mike Keneally as music director, as well as Morgan Ågren (Mats And Morgan, Frank Zappa, Fredrik Thordendal), Anup Sastry (Monuments, Periphery), Samus Paulicelli (Decrepit Birth, Abigail Williams), Nathan Navarro, Elliot Desagnes, Steve Vai, Chad Kroeger, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Ché Aimee Dorval, Ryan Dhale and the Elektra Women’s Choir.

A bold statement with massive production values and dynamic, uncompromised musicality. This is a statement about not only pursuing creative freedom in a conservative scene, but also trying to show that heavy music is truly a valid musical tool.

‘EMPATH’ is out now on Limited 2 CD Digipak in O-Card (including an entire disc of bonus material), Standard CD Jewelcase, Gatefold 180G 2LP Vinyl + CD + LP-booklet & as digital album. Order now here:

SOTO, the modern Heavy Metal / Hard Rock group featuring vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (ex Yngwie Malmsteen / Talisman / ex Journey, Sons Of Apollo, TSO, etc.), continue to promote their recently released third album and InsideOutMusic debut “Origami”.

Currently on tour across the UK and Europe, SOTO are now also launching a new video clip directed by Thiago Kiss for the track “Torn”. Check it out here:

Jeff Scott Soto checked in from on the road as follows:
JSS checking in from the Origami tour, we have completed the UK portion already and now digging into the Central Europe leg, so far the reception has been incredible, especially to the new songs and album! 3 more weeks coming up with Scandinavia next then we start working our way south eventually ending all the way down in Athens, we live for this, we look forward to seeing you all out there!

And Soto further commented about the video clip for “Torn” as follows:
While we were about to start the EU tour, we asked our video director in Brazil, Thiago Kiss, to whip us up a treatment for another Single from ‘Origami’ called “Torn”. This is an emotional song co-written with drummer Edu Cominato, myself and the same writer as our 1st video Single “HyperMania”, Luiz Portinari. We chose this track as the deep lyric and theme of the song is a double entendre that could be taken from the crumbling of a relationship between 2 people or the crumbling of society and humanity. In our videos, we try to also portray triple entendres as will be evident in this new clip. Once again, Thiago paints visually stunning lush and cinematic landscapes along with story lines that make you ‘feel’ more than just watch!

Make sure not to miss SOTO on the remaining shows of their European tour:

Guitarist John Petrucci elaborates, “’Barstool Warrior’ is a fictional tale about two characters, unrelated but connected in their lament over being stuck in dead end situations.
The first is a local townie, alcoholic who never escaped the humdrum of his sleepy, maritime village. The second, a woman trapped in an abusive relationship trying to survive from day to day while questioning what makes her stay.
Both are able to reimagine their lives and find the courage to embrace a better future by embodying the person they dream of being.”

2019 is a busy year for Steve. Following the success of the orchestral tour Steve released his 25th studio album ‘At the Edge of Light’ in January. He and the band then embarked on the Selling England/Spectral Mornings Tour across Europe and the USA before they return for 20 dates in the UK in November. This tour marks the first time Steve has performed the whole of his favourite Genesis album ‘Selling England by the Pound’ together with Steve’s favourite songs from his solo ‘Spectral Mornings’ album, celebrating its 40th anniversary, and tracks from his current album.

PATTERN-SEEKING ANIMALS is the brand new group featuring the talents of current & former Spock’s Beard members Ted Leonard (lead vocals & guitar), Jimmy Keegan (drums & vocals) and Dave Meros (bass) as well as long-time contributing songwriter-keyboardist John Boegehold who also produced the album.

The band’s eponymously titled debut album was released via InsideOutMusic in July 2019 and now releases a lyric video for the album’s closing epic ‘Stars Along the Way’. The clip, created by Stan Ausmus at JuzMaintain Productions, can be viewed here:

John Boegehold has the following to say about this track:
So, let me get this straight. You’re saying that a song that’s more than ten minutes long with inscrutable lyrics, multiple key, time and tempo changes, mellotron and fretless bass with several guitar and synth solos doesn’t stand a chance of toppling Taylor Swift and BTS from the top of worldwide pop charts? Not sure I like your negative attitude, mister.

The album is available as limited CD digipak, gatefold 2LP + CD and on all digital platforms. Order now here:
