Great show, Cliff – looking forward to the next one!
Cliff,
In one of your monthly editions have you ever though about doing a sort of “lesson” to introduce newbies like me to the complex world of Progressive music?
I have to admit that I can listen to some of it but my ear can’t still stand ELP.. it’s something I can’t control: my ears just refuse to listen to their music..
Sorry, I know it’s worse than an heresy!
Not at all Brunella – I know many Prog fans who just can’t listen to such people as King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator or Kansas, but wouldn’t it be a boring place if we all liked the same things?
My own philosophy is that there are only two kinds of music: what you like and what you don’t! The most important thing is to keep an open mind.
I like the idea of a ‘Beginners Guide to Prog’ – it may be a good idea for a Progzilla ‘special’ – something for us Prog fans to give to those who have trouble counting in 7s, have no idea what a Mellotron is and wouldn’t know a ‘Khatru’ if it bit them! B->
All the best
Thanks a lot Cliff.. will be looking out for this “special edition” so that I can impress all my friends (religiously ALL prog fans of course!)
PS: I don’t have a clue of what a Mellotron or a Khatru are.. do they bite? are they edible????
Google is your friend! B->
A Mellotron is a keyboard instrument, originally made in the sixties and was the first form of sampler – it used recordings of real instruments on tape strips, one per key. As you can imagine, that makes for a very heavy instrument with very few sound choices – it take 3-4 people to move one.
It’s a staple instrument in Prog – the intro to The Beatles ‘Strawberry Fields’ or the Moody Blues ‘Nights In White Satin’ is where you will have heard one before.
You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellotron
A Khatru is a made up word: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siberian_Khatru
All the best
